Zimpler started in 2012 as PugglePay, founded by Johan Friis and Kristofer Ekman Sinclair. The pitch was simple: pay online using your mobile number, one of the few numbers most people know by heart. The team built an invoicing product, moved into space at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg in 2013, and expanded into Finland the following year. In 2016 PugglePay rebranded as Zimpler and added the account-to-account service most people meet today. It is regulated by Finansinspektionen, Sweden’s financial supervisory authority, as an authorised payment institution rather than a bank. That distinction matters at a casino: Zimpler is a route between your existing bank and the operator, not a place where you keep a balance the way you would with an e-wallet.
How a Zimpler deposit works
Because there is no wallet to preload, the money comes straight out of your bank. At a casino cashier you pick Zimpler, choose your country and bank, and get handed to your bank’s own login. All of which explains why the badge is common in a Stockholm or São Paulo cashier and rare in a British one: the product was built for markets where paying straight from a bank account is the norm, while UK players lean on cards and established e-wallets.
Two things that changed in 2025
Older reviews miss both. In October 2025 Finansinspektionen gave Zimpler a formal remark and a 3 million kronor fine for anti-money-laundering failings between July 2023 and April 2024. The regulator found gaps in how Zimpler assessed risk and checked customers, and the context is the part worth knowing: around 30 per cent of its 258 merchants were gambling businesses and roughly 70 per cent of its end users had a gambling connection, so those controls sat under real pressure. Days later, on 21 October 2025, the UK open-banking firm TrueLayer agreed to buy Zimpler; the deal closed in 2026 once the Swedish regulator signed off, creating a pay-by-bank group with more than 20 million users. None of this changes how a deposit looks at the cashier, but it does tell you Zimpler now sits inside a larger UK-based network rather than a standalone Swedish outfit.
Using it at a UK casino
Here is the plain position: it is hard to find a UK-licensed casino that lists Zimpler by name. The method is aimed at the Nordics, the Baltics and Brazil, and most UK operators stick to cards, e-wallets and other bank-transfer options. Where a UK site does offer it, treat it as a deposit-first method; some accept Zimpler for deposits but pay winnings back by bank transfer instead. Where payouts to Zimpler are supported, return-to-source rules usually send the money back to the same bank account you deposited from, once your account is verified.
