A German bank transfer that Klarna bought and folded in
Sofort started in 2005 near Munich as Sofortüberweisung, an instant-transfer service that let people pay online straight from their current account. Rather than handing over card details, you picked your bank, logged in through a Sofort page, and the service pushed the money to the merchant while confirming the payment in real time. It caught on across German-speaking Europe because it worked with the online banking people already had.
Klarna acquired the company in 2014, in a deal reported at around 150 million euros that formed the Klarna Group. Klarna kept the service running, renamed the consumer-facing product “Pay now” in 2017, and gradually pulled it under its own payments brand. So the name you remember as Sofort has been a Klarna product for years, which is why casinos increasingly show a Klarna badge where Sofort used to sit.
Why it rarely turned up at a UK casino
Sofort was a euro-area method at heart. Its home ground was Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with support reaching a handful of other European banking systems. British players already had their own instant options, from debit cards to PayPal and later open banking, so most UK-licensed casinos never bothered to add it. New businesses lost the ability to add Sofort in November 2023, and through 2024 the processors that still offered it set their own end dates: Mollie closed it at the end of September 2024, and Stripe’s final cut-off, after an extension, was 31 March 2025. Past those dates a Sofort payment simply fails. Germany’s other well-known bank-transfer scheme, giropay, was wound down on the same timeline and shut for good on 31 December 2024, so the two names you used to meet at German-facing cashiers are both gone. In practice, a casino that still lists “Sofort” is either running down an old integration or really means Klarna.
How a Sofort deposit works, where it still runs
Where a cashier still offers it, the flow is the same as it always was. You choose Sofort, pick your country and bank, then log in with your normal online banking details on the Sofort screen and approve the payment with whatever your bank uses, a one-time code or an app tap. The casino gets an instant confirmation and usually credits your balance right away, even though the actual bank transfer settles a little later. You do not open or fund a separate Sofort account; it uses the current account you already have.
The catch is that it only ever moved money one way, from you to the casino. Sofort is deposit-only, so when you want to cash out the casino pays you by bank transfer or back to a card instead. That is worth planning for before you deposit, because your winnings come back through a different and usually slower route than they went in.
What to use instead
If a casino you like once took Sofort, the closest live replacement is Klarna’s own Pay now option, which does the same job.
