A wallet built for Latin America and India
AstroPay started in Uruguay in 2009 as an alternative payment method for Latin American players paying at international checkouts, sitting next to the card and PayPal buttons. It later spun off two businesses that outgrew it: dLocal in 2016, which became Uruguay’s first tech unicorn and went public, and its payment-processing arm D24 in 2020. What was left was rebuilt into a consumer multicurrency wallet, run in the UK by a company called Larstal Limited.
Its home markets are Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru and India, and the way you top the wallet up reflects that: PIX instant transfers in Brazil, SPEI or cash at an OXXO store in Mexico, UPI in India. That local plumbing is the reason the wallet exists, and it is why AstroPay turns up in cashiers aimed at those players rather than in a typical UK lobby. Roughly twenty UK-facing casinos list it, against the hundreds that take a debit card or an e-wallet.
The AstroPay Card is gone
For years the AstroPay product people actually met at casinos was a prepaid voucher, the AstroPay Card: you bought a code and typed it into the cashier, with no account needed. AstroPay stopped issuing those vouchers on 16 December 2024 and moved that side of the business to a separate brand, iCash.One. Today you fund an AstroPay account and pay from the wallet balance or a virtual card generated in the app. There is no first-party AstroPay voucher to buy any more. Some third-party resellers still sell top-up codes, but those are not AstroPay’s own product, so if a casino page or an older guide tells you to buy an AstroPay Card, that route closed at the end of 2024. The change matters because a voucher and an account-based wallet behave differently: one needs no sign-up, the other needs an account, identity checks and a funded balance before you can deposit. What the FCA freeze means in the UK
This is the part casino guides skip, and it is worth knowing before you rely on the wallet. On 11 April 2024 the Financial Conduct Authority placed Larstal Limited, the UK entity behind AstroPay, under a voluntary undertaking that stopped it taking new customer funds, issuing or redeeming e-money, and onboarding new UK customers, and required it to ringfence customer money in safeguarding accounts. The action followed reported financial difficulties at the firm. That freeze ran until July 2025, when an updated undertaking replaced it and let AstroPay sign up UK customers again. The service is back, but the episode is a useful reminder that this is a smaller e-money firm than the banks and card schemes behind most casino payments, and that a balance you hold sits with AstroPay rather than in a bank account.
How a deposit actually works
You need an AstroPay account before you can pay a casino, because the deposit comes out of your wallet rather than straight off a card. Setting one up means the usual identity checks, then funding the balance through whatever local method your country supports: a bank transfer or debit card in Europe, PIX in Brazil, UPI in India. At the cashier you choose AstroPay and either approve the payment inside the AstroPay app or type in the details of a virtual card the app creates for you. An approved deposit reaches your casino balance immediately, which is the main reason people reach for it. One UK rule still bites through the side door: gambling on a credit card has been banned since April 2020, and that ban covers loading an e-wallet from a credit card and gambling with it, so an AstroPay balance funded from a credit card is not a way round it at a UK Gambling Commission site.
Getting money back out
Withdrawals are the weaker half. Plenty of casinos treat AstroPay as deposit-only and will pay you back by bank transfer instead. Where payouts to AstroPay are offered, anti-money-laundering rules mean you can normally only cash out to the wallet you deposited from, and only once the account is verified. Money returned to the wallet arrives quickly after the casino approves it, though the casino’s own review can take anything from a few hours to several working days, the same as any method. If getting paid back to the same place matters to you, check the cashier’s withdrawal list before you deposit, because AstroPay often is not on it.
Is it worth using at a UK casino?
If you already hold an AstroPay wallet, usually because you live in or send money to one of its home markets, it does a real job: it keeps your bank card out of the casino’s hands and holds several currencies at once. For a UK player starting from scratch the case is thinner. You would be opening and funding an extra account with a smaller firm to reach a method only a handful of UK casinos accept, when an e-wallet such as Neteller or an open-banking option like Trustly is taken far more widely and pays out more readily. Is AstroPay available at UK casinos?
Yes, but only at a small number of sites. AstroPay is an international wallet aimed mainly at players in Latin America and India, and roughly twenty UK-facing casinos list it against the hundreds that take a debit card or PayPal.
